Crunch time for Liverpool

Tuesday 24 November 2009 ·

Liverpool are busy preparing for their important match in Hungary tonight with most of the questions from journalists being, "Will you be keeping a close eye on the score in Italy?" Jamie Carragher and Rafa Benitez have been careful in answering these questions stating the obvious, "We'll concentrate on our doing our job." Yet Carragher, the epitomy of Liverpool's never-say-die attitude, appears to be resigned to the possibility of Europa League football, "We're still focused and believe we can go through in the Champions League. If not,
you move on." (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8375625.stm)
The underlying comments in many of the press reports is that Liverpool's season will be effectively over should they not qualify for the next round of the Champions League but does this not devalue an already much-maligned competition and would it not be better for the Europa League if a club of Liverpool's stature were to compete?

Georges Bataille once asked, "Would the fly be to God what the tickled arsehole is to the sensual woman?"

Similarly I ask, Would the Europa League be to Liverpool what Liverpool would be to the Europa League?

I dare say the answer is no on both counts.
